Smitten by a Sardaarji

An old Sikh man, white big heavy beard and wearing blue overalls entered the metro train a station before Kashmere Gate station. He should have taken my seat because I was sitting in one of those seats reserved for the elderlies and physically disableds and I would have gladly given it up had he come my way for it. I maybe have been reading a book and so he didn’t want to give me the trouble. Instead he proceeded to stand at an open clearing in the walkway of the train, join his hand around his waist and sing. He started to sing loud enough for half of the coach to hear. This old man, looking to be a volunteering worker at a Sikh Temple (Workers at Sikh gurudwaras wear blue in their attire), started singing songs of his Guruji. I didn’t get a word from his heavy Punjabi accent but his voice was clear and still. His words were filled with peace and then despair hit me as I had to get off at Kashmere Gate station while he continued standing there and sang, in such a peaceful trance that the ruffling of travellers around getting on or off the train did not mind him.
